TRY BOWLS EVENT - SATURDAY 6TH AUGUST

On Saturday 6th August, the club will hold a Try Bowls day with the aim of encouraging non-bowlers to come along to the club between 2pm and 5pm and give bowls a try. We will have some coaching and some games for anyone coming along with a prize for the best non-bowler on the day. Members are asked to encourage friends, family and work colleagues to give it a shot and to come along on the day and help out. Please speak to John Duff if you can assist with the arrangements.

NORTH PERTHSHIRE LEAGUE WINNERS!

Aberfeldy BC has had a successful year in the North Perthshire League with confirmation recently that the club has won it Pairs, Triples and Fours sections and the overall League title! Congratulations to everyone involved who played in the club’s NPL games. The Winners Green match will therefore take place on our green on Saturday 17th September.

DEATH OF ALEX MELVILLE, BANKFOOT BC

It is with much regret that we announce the death of Alex Melville of Bankfoot BC. Our thoughts and prayers are  with his wife, Alice, and family. His funeral takes place on Monday 4th July at 2pm within Bankfoot Church Centre. Thereafter, to Auchtergaven Cemetery at 2:45pm. Retiring collection for MacMillan Nurses.

PERTHSHIRE BOWLING ASSOCIATION TOP 5 COMPETITION

The Perthshire Bowling Association is proposing to hold a Top 5 Singles Knock Out competition on 3 or 4 Mondays in August with the Final taking place on a Sunday in September. Any gent who would be interested in taking part, please place your name on the sheets within either clubhouse or email the Secretary.

CLUB BOWLS STICKERS

Bowls stickers in the club colours are now available. Members should now have been issued with four pairs of stickers. Further sets can be purchased from the bar at 50p per pair.

CLUB SHIRTS

Members who would like to order further shirts should contact John Duff (01887 820217) as soon as possible with their name and shirt size. Extra shirts cost £25.

 

09 APRIL 2016

OPENING WEEKEND

Members enjoyed a sunny afternoon on opening day as President Billy Devlin officially opened the green for 2016. After welcoming a good turnout of members, he invited Past President Anne Woolley to throw the first jack. Members played a President v Past President match, narrowly won by the Past President before members enjoyed a lovely tea. The Sunday saw an Aberfeldy team play away against Rattray BC. The least said about the score the better but it was a very good day's bowling!

 

09 APRIL 2016

NEW SEASON FAST APPROACHES

The new season starts at 2pm (for 2:30pm) today when President Billy Devlin will open the green. All members and new members are respectfully invited to attend. Club colours(greys and whites) to be worn. Please bring a raffle prize.

DEATH OF MEMBER

It is with much sadness that we announce the death of another long serving member of Aberfeldy Bowling Club - Dan Nimmo. Dan who had lately resided at Abbeyfield within Aberfeldy would have been 93 years of age next week. He had been a member of the bowling club for a great many years and was President of Aberfeldy BC in 2003. Dan's funeral takes place on Friday 11th March 2016 at 12 noon within Aberfeldy Parish Church followed by internment at Aberfeldy Cemetery.

 

25 JANUARY 2016

DEATH OF MEMBER

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of a long serving member of Aberfeldy Bowling Club - Bunty Sutherland. Bunty had been a member of the club for many years and although latterly unable to play due to ill health, she always expressed the wish that some day she might be able to get back onto the green. The funeral will take place on Wednesday 3rd February at 1pm within Aberfeldy Parish Church followed by a commital at Aberfeldy Cemetery and the funeral tea within the Bowling Club. Our deepest sympathies are given to son Duncan, daughter Dawn and their families.

 

10 JANUARY 2016

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

At the club's Annual General Meeting, Billy Devlin was installed as our President for 2016. Outgoing President Anne Woolley congratulated him and wished him a good year. The club also agreed the new club shirt (dark blue collar, light blue side panels and gold placket) become the standard wear for club colours together with grey trousers/skirts. All members will be issued with one club shirt free of charge which will also have the players name below the club badge. Further shirts can be ordered at cost (£25). Members who have still to give their size and details to the Secretary are asked to do so by 24th January 2016 in order for the shirts to be available for the start of nthe new season. NOTICE OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2016

All members are hereby notified that the Club's Annual General Meeting will take place within the clubhouse at 2pm on Sunday 10th January 2016. The Agenda and Minutes are available within the clubhouse or from the Secretary (John Duff). All members are invited to attend. Apologies for non-attendance should be given to the Secretary prior to the meeting.

PERTHSHIRE BA APPOINTS RAY AS VICE PRESIDENT

The Perthshire Bowling Association has appointed Aberfeldy's Ray Taylor as Vice President at its recent AGM. Ray, a Past President at Aberfeldy BC, has been serving on the PBA Committee for the last 2 years and is delighted to have received the support of the Aberfeldy BC Committee and the PBA Committee in taking up this appointment. This is a great honour for Ray and for the club and we wish Ray well during his year in office.

 

27 SEPTEMBER 2015

CLOSING OF THE GREEN

The end of season was marked by a game of Australian Pairs won by Ray Taylor and Frances Inglis. Congratulations to them both. A good turnout of 28 players saw a seventh rink deployed on the green and members enjoyed a lovely sunny afternoon of good-hearted bowling to close the green. The President, Anne Woolley, thanked everyone who had helped to makle the day go so well and also took the opportunity to thank all who had supported her in any way during her Presidential year. The green will be prepared for winter tomorrow (Monday 28th September) at 10am when all the equipment, mats, benches, etc will be put into storage for the closed season. Any member able to help should come long at 10am to help.

21 SEPTEMBER 2015

NOMINATION PAIRS

The final of the Nomination Pairs took place on Friday evening last between Jimmy Hermiston/Douglas Craik and Peter Butter/Neil Baillie. In an exciting 17-end final, Neil and Peter emerged victorious to take the trophy. Congratulations to Peter and Neil.

 

FLOODLIT MATCH - FRIDAY 25TH SEPTEMBER

The annual end of season floodlit game will take place this Friday, 25th September. If you are interested in playing, please add your name to the list in the old clubhouse. The start time is still to be decided and will likely be announced at Rink Night tomorrow.

 

AUSTRALIAN PAIRS - SUNDAY 27TH SEPTEMBER

The closing of the green will take place on Sunday 27th September with a game of Australian Pairs. This involves the pair alternating between leading and skipping and is a very enjoyable format. Again, everyone is encouraged to get there names down on the sheet in the old clubhouse. It's you last chance to throw a bowl this year, so come along and join in!

 

NORTH PERTHSHIRE SENIOR LEAGUE RESULT

This year's trial of an NPL Senior League has resulted in a win for Blair Atholl BC who lifted the league title with 16 points. Aberfeldy BC and Pitlochry BC were joint second on 14 points. Well done to Blair Atholl and to all those who took part for Aberfeldy!

 

11 SEPTEMBER 2015

BARHAUL TROPHY

Winners of the new competition, the Barhaul Trophy, were Peter Jack and Billy Devlin who beat Isla Duncan and John Duff in the final. The Barhaul Trophy is a 2-bowl pairs competition of two sets of seven ends. The highest up pair in each set scores one point. If the two sets end in a 1-1 draw, a further 3 end tiebreaker ensues to decide the winners. The club is very grateful to Barhaul and Mr Patrick Bradley for their very generous donation of the trophy for this new competition.

 

 

30 AUGUST 2015

STEWART TRIPLES 

The winners of the Stewart Triples for 2015 were Billy Devlin, Jimmy Hermiston and Christine MacLennan who beat Isla Duncan, Muriel Findlay and Peter Butter in the final. Nine triples entered the tournament and there were many fine games in the lead up to the final. Teams enjoyed some good weather and a number of spectators joined the teams to watch the well-fought final. Congratulations to both teams for reaching the final and to Billy, Jimmy and Christine for emerging as this year's winners. See photographs in the Photos 2015 section.

FINALS WEEK 2015

The final matches in the club competitions were played off yesterday evening (Friday) with Douglas Craik winning the Gents Championship against Billy Devlin and Jimmy Hermiston winning the Seniors Trophy against Willie Thomson.  Congratulations to Douglas and Jimmy and well done to Billy and Willie as runners-up. FINALS WEEK 2015

Finals Week update: In the Black Watch Trophy, Neil Baillie beat Billy Devlin and in the Pitilie Shield, Christine MacLennan beat Douglas Craik. Congratulations to Neil and to Christine and also to Billy and Douglas as runners-up.

Last night, Isla Duncan beat Christine MacLennan to become the club's Ladies Champion. In the Reid Cup, George Dark beat Ivor Richards. Well done to Isla and to George! And congratulations to Christine and Ivor for reaching the finals too.

Tonight (Friday) sees the final of the Seniors Trophy between Willie Thomson and Jimmy Hermiston and also the Gents Championship between Billy Devlin and Douglas Craik. Come along and cheer them on. Games start at 6:30pm.

FINALS WEEK 2015

Time and tide wait for no-one! It's Finals Week already and tonight saw the first of the finals - the President's Prize - where Neill Baillie took on Norrie Rattray with Neil winning. Congraulations to Neil and well done to Norrie too! Come along each night this week to see the various finals which start at 6:30pm. NPBA CENTENARY TRIPLES SUCCESS!

Both Aberfeldy teams made it through to the final of the NPBA Centenary Triples at Dunkeld earlier today. Roddy McRobert's triple (Norrie Rattray and Ray Taylor) met Billy Devlin's team (Anne Woolley and Isla Duncan) in the final with Roddy's triple winning the Centenary Shield. Congratulations to both teams for reaching the final and to Roddy, Ray and Norrie for bringing back the trophy!

 

 

 

NORTH PERTHSHIRE LEAGUE RESULTS

This year's NPL has been won by Spittalfield BC with Pitlochry BC second and Aberfeldy BC third. Aberfeldy teams won both the rinks and the triples - well done to all involved!

Congratulations to Billy Devlin and Christine MacLennan, winners of the Barnet Mixed Pairs competition and commiserations to Roddy McRobert and Anne Woolley, the runners up. 

 

ABERFELDY PLAYERS ACHIEVE PERTHSHIRE SENIORS SELECTION

Three Aberfeldy BC players have been selected to play for Perthshire Seniors - Ray Taylor, Douglas Craik and Neil Baillie - out of a team of 16 players in total. This is a tremendous achievement for our club. The first match is against Mearns on Tuesday 11th August. The home game is at Alyth BC and commences at 2pm. Good luck gents!

NORTH SENIOR LEAGUE

Perthshire Bowling Association will be entering the North Senioir League once more this year. Players need to be over 55 years of age on 1st April 2015. A trial has been arranged for Thursday 23rd July at Perth BC for anyone interested in participating. Players must arrive by 1:15pm for the trial commencing at 2pm. The league matches will be played on a Tuesday afternoon starting in August.

NPL SENIOR LEAGUE

The North Perthshire League has just announced details of its new Senior League (for over 55's). Starting on Wednesday 5 August, teams will enter two Triples - one home and the other away - for a 15 ends plus one trial end match. Games will be played each Wednesday through until 2 September and can be played either in the morning or afternoon by arrangement with the opposition team. The first match, on 5 August, is against Dunkeld BC, and a sheet has been placed on the noticeboard in the old clubhouse for names. If you are interested, please get your name down now!

 

14 JUNE 2015

ABERFELDY OPEN TRIPLES RESULT

The 2015 Open Triples competition at Aberfeldy Bowling Club was won by local team, Jimmy Hermiston, Peter Jack and Alex McGravie. In a closely fought final played under sunny skies, they beat a Bankfoot team of Alan Montgomery, Andrew Carcary and Ian Kean to win the Rose and Campbell Trophy. SCOTTISH SENIOR INTERNATIONAL TEAM ANNOUNCED

The Scottish Senior International team has been announced and Chris McGready from Perth is one of four new caps; while Scott Strachan from Rattray, who had a trial on Sunday, misses out this year. The B.I.B.C. Senior Internationals are to be held at Eddlewood B.C. Hamilton on Sat June 27th - games at 9am and 2pm and Sun 28th game at 9am. The last Perthshire bowler to play for the Scottish Senior International team was Douglas Lambert in 1984.

 

12 MAY 2015

EGM GIVES UNANIMOUS SUPPORT TO CLUBHOUSE PROPOSALS

At the EGM held on 12 May 2015, members unanimously gave their support to the committee's proposals to refurbish and extend the main clubhouse and to the re-edging of the green. These proposals are being developed with the assistance of local architects, Fearn Macpherson, and involve relocating the kitchen and bar and a small extension to the west end of the clubhouse to allow for better toilet facilities and disabled access from the green to the clubhouse.

 

An application to the SSE's Griffin Wind Farm Fund for funding has been supported and the committee is in the process of providing further information to the Fund. Further details of the project will appear on the website soon so watch this space.

BLAIR ATHOLL BC 150TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

The North Perthshire Bowling Association took part in a match against Blair Atholl BC to celebrate their 150th Anniversary. The Aberfeldy rink, skipped by Douglas Craik with Anne Woolley, Bob Gunn (Blair Atholl) and John Duff was the highest up rink. Blair Atholl Bowling Club was presented with a clock by the NPBA. President Woolley presented the Blair Atholl BC President, Jim Haggart, with an engraved bottle of Aberfeldy 12 year old malt whisky and whisky glass.

EXTRAORDINARY GENERAL MEETING

An Extraordinary General Meeting of the club will be held within the clubhouse on Tuesday 12th May immediately after rink night. The purpose of the meeting is to receive a presentation on the proposed plans for the alterations and refurbishment of the clubhouse and re-edging of the green. After the presentation and discussion, members will be asked to approve the proposed plans and authorise the committee to proceed with the project. All members are therefore invited to attend the EGM.

GREEN OPENS FOR 2015 SEASON

President Anne Woolley opened the green for the new 2015 season and warmly welcomed members to the opening day. Afterwards, Mr Peter Woolley, Past President of Aberfeldy Bopwling Club and husband of the new President, threw the first jack. Members then to part in a fun event, a spider, for a bottle of whisky which was won by Peter Woolley!

Members started the season with a friendly match between the President and Vice President which the Vice President's team won 34 - 47.

Membership fees are now due (Adults £40; Seniors (over 55yrs) £35; Juniors (free first year then £10); Social Members £10). New members are very welcome. Application forms can be downloaded by clicking here.

BARHAUL TROPHY

This year, the club will implement a new competition which will be called the Barhaul Trophy. Barhaul has very kindly agreed to provide a trophy in appreciation of naming the competition after one of the club's most generous sponsors. The competition will be a two-bowl pairs competition featuring two sets of  seven ends (1 point for a win or half a point for a draw) plus 3 tie-break ends if the match is drawn after the two sets. The competition will be run over the course of 4 or 5 evenings in September.

BOWLS SCOTLAND SUPER SERIES

Bowls Scotland has recently announced a new national competition called the Scottish Super Series. This Open competition will feature both singles and pairs competitions for ladies and gents with eight regional qualifiers leading to a Grand Final weekend at Kelvingrove. The competition is open to male and female bowlers of any age or ability. Players reaching the Grand Final will be awarded ranking points towards selection for the national team. LAWS OF THE SPORT

The Laws of the Sport have recently been updated and a new rule book has been published. The new book which contains a number of changes to the laws can be accessed by clicking here.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

At the Club's Annual General Meeting on Sunday 11th January 2015, Anne Woolley was elected as President for 2015. Anne thanked members for their support in appointing her as President for the coming year and wished everyone a good bowling season when it comes.

BREADALBANE ACADEMY PRESENTATION

Following the appearance of the Breadalbane Academy Ceilidh Band at the Club's Annual Prize Giving Dinner, President Bob Woolley attended the school to meet members of the Ceilidh Band and present them with a certificate confirming their £250 donation to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ebola Crisis Appeal.

PRIZE GIVING DINNER 2014

At the recent annual prize giving dinner, the members were entertained by the Breadalbane Academy Ceilidh Band. The Club made a donation of £250 to the band who immediately announced that it would be given to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ebola Appeal. Well done to the youngsters!

The Gents and Ladies Club Champions 2014 are Hamie McRobert and Diana Taylor. Neither of them have won these championships before so many congratulations to them both. Well done!

SALSC GENTS 50+ TOURNAMENT 2014

Having hosted the SALSC Gents Bowling Tournament last year, and the Ladies Tournament this year, the club entered a rink into the SALSC Gents Bowls 2014 competition at The Inverness Bowling Club. On a glorious day weatherwise, the Aberfeldy rink of Jimmy Hermiston (Skip), Ray Taylor (3rd), Douglas Craik (2nd) and John Duff (Lead) fought off stiff competition from clubs across Scotland to emerge as winners beating Nairn BC 7-4 in the final. Congratulations guys!

JOHN & CARMEN RITTER, ABERFELDIE BC

The Club recently played host to John and Carmen Ritter, members of Aberfeldie Bowling Club in Melbourne, Australia. The Ritters are friends of Peter and Anne Woolley and recently spent a few days with them in Aberfeldy. Carmen is a keen bowler and asked if she could play with us during a match when she was here. She was part of the team that went to the friendly with Newport BC. Many thanks to Carmen for taking part in that away game. We hope they both enjoyed their time with us. Pictured right is Carmen in action.

VICE PRESIDENT APPOINTED

At the recent Club Committee meeting, Anne Woolley was co-opted onto the Committee and unanimously appointed as the Club's Vice President. The club has operated without a Vice Prresident since the AGM in January. The Committee were very  pleased when Anne expressed an interest in filling the post and are delighted to welcome her to the Committee and to her new office.

NORTH SENIOR LEAGUE TRIAL

The PBA have decided to continue in the NORTH SENIOR LEAGUE for season 2014. The competition is open to all players of Perthshire clubs who are aged over 55 on the first of April 2014. The games will be played on Tuesday afternoons from August 2014 and all players in the County over 55 are eligible to be considered for selection to play in this competition. A trial will take place on Bankfoot Bowling Green on Tuesday 22nd July at 2-00pm and interested players should arrive at Bankfoot Green by 1-30pm.

GREEN CLOSED SATURDAY 12TH JULY

Members are asked to note that the green will be closed on Saturday 12th July from opening time until the completion of the Perthshire Bowling Association semi-finals that afternoon. Thank you for your co-operation. Sadly the club doesn't have any teams playing in the semi-finals but members are encouraged to come along and spectate!

 

PITILIE SHIELD

The draw has been made for the Pitilie Shield (those who were put out in the first round of the Reid Cup) and is on the noticeboard in the old clubhouse. First round to be played by 27th July.

As the numbers signed up for the competition were low, the committee has decided to posdtpone the competition and will seek another date in August or September. Members will be advised in due course.

CARAVANNERS v CLUB

This new competition will take place on Saturday 24 May at 5pm and will include a presentation of Past President medals to 17 Past Presidents of the club; a spider competition for a bottle of whisky; a bowling match between the two sides; supper and entertainment till late. Sheets for the names of those interested in playing are on the notice boards in both clubhouses. Names should be entered prior to 7pm on Thursday 22 May 2014. If you are not able to play, please feel free to come along and watch and enjoy the entertainment.

LESZKE TROPHY

The final of the Leszke Trophy was fought out between Willie Thomson and Colin Dow with Colin winning the day. The winner's trophy and runners-up plaque were presented by sponsor, Willie Leszke, who also donated the first prize of a litre bottle of whisky and runners up prize, a bottle of gin. Well done to Colin, commiserations to Willie T and thanks to Willie L for once again supporting this long-running club competition.

McKINLAY 2-BOWL SINGLES

Congratulations to George Dark who won the first club competition of 2014, the McKinlay 2-bowl singles, against Billy Devlin!

 

HISTORIC SCOTLAND PUBLICATION

Following a nationwide review of public sports buildings, Historic Scotland will soon publish a celebratory book about Scotland’s sporting heritage which will feature our original clubhouse. Built in 1906, by local architect and civil engineer, William Bell (1856-1914), the old clubhouse is a listed building (Category B). The book will be launched in time for the Commonwealth Games this summer. Watch this space!

McKINLAY 2-BOWL SINGLES

The draw has now been made for next week's McKinlay 2-bowl singles. Ties will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings at 6:30pm with the Final being played on Thursday evening at 6:30pm. Members should note that there will NOT be a rink night on Tuesday evening as a result. Rink Nights will recommence on Tuesday 22nd April at 6:30pm.

BOWLING GREEN OPENED

 

A large turnout of members attended the opening of the green for 2014 on Saturday 5th April. President Bob Woolley welcomed the members and wished everyone an enjoyable season before his wife, Jean, threw the first jack. Members participated in a friendly match between the President and Past President with the President's team winning 40-29. Sheets for the Club Competitions (Championships, Reid Cup, Black Watch, etc) have been put up in the old clubhouse with a closing date of Friday 2nd May. In addition, firendly matches take place against Rattray (away on Sunday 13th April) and Newburgh (at home on Saturday 26th April) and sheets are on display for these games. The McKinlay 2-bowl singles starts on Monday 14th April and names must be submitted by  7pm on Friday 11th April.

 

NEW CHAIN OF OFFICE

A new Chain of Office has been acquired as there was no room to add any more names on the previous one. The new Chain displays the 150th Anniversary badge on the front and has been populated with the names of the Presidents from 2011 onwards. The original chain will be framed and displayed in the clubhouse.

CLUB SECURES QMS/SPORTSCOTLAND GRANT

The club has recently received notice from QMS (Quality Meat Scotland) and SportScotland that it has been awarded one of its £500 grants towards the purchase of sets of bowls for juniors to use. The club has established a relationship with Breadalbane Academy which will result in a number of pupils coming along to the green during their PE sesssions to receive coaching lessons and the grant will be very helpful in acquiring sets of small size bowls for their use. We are grateful to Quality Meat Scotland and SportScotland for their support.

CLUB RECEIVES PACES CERTIFICATE

At today's meeting of the Community Sports Partnership, President Bob Woolley was presented with the Perth & Kinross Accredited Club Excellence Scheme (PACES) Certificate. Since the club joined the Local Sports Council, it has been working to achieve Foundation Level  certification under the scheme which ensures clubs meet a number of essential criteria like qualified coaches, trained first aiders, child protection procedures and equal opportunities for all participants. As a member of the Sports Council, the club is also able to access free training and support.

INSTALLATION OF PRESIDENT FOR 2014

At the Club's AGM held earlier today, Bob Woolley was elected as President for 2014 and installed into his office by outgoing President John Duff. President Woolley thanked members for the tremendous honour of becoming President of Aberfeldy Bowling Club and congratulated Past President John Duff for completing a successful year.
