However, only one pair managed the full set to win with six points - Billy Devlin and Ernie Swift. So congratulations to them for winning the final match of 2013.
The green is now closed and members are asked to attend at the club tomorrow (Monday 30 September) at 10am to help with clearing up the green and putting the equipment, settings, etc away for the winter.

The shot changed hands several times during the last end with the Taylors eventually lying 2 shots. With his final bowl, Douglas fired at the head but couldn't reverse the score and the game finished 18-14 for Diana and Ray. LADIES FOURS MAKE IT TO THE FINAL!
The fairytale journey continued today when the ladies played their semi~final match today against Dumfries. The match was initially postponed from its scheduled 9:30am start due to their opposition not having played their match the previous evening. The semi~final match started badly for Aberfeldy who lost a 5 at the first end, but they clawed the score back to 5~5 by the 5th end. By the 8th end they were 11~8 up but Dumfries closed the gap to 13~11 after 12 ends. Aberfeldy moved to 14~12 up for the last end requiring Dumfries to score two shots to force the extra end. Aberfeldy drew a great shot to take the end and finish up 15~12 ............the ladies had made it, they were in the final!
The final was played against Baillieston BC and, true to form, Aberfeldy started by losing a four at the first end! Shortly afterwards, rain stopped play when a very heavy downpour saw play suspended across the entire greens! Spectators huddled under umbrellas while the rain poured down. Play restarted after about 15 minutes and the score moved to 7-all after 6 ends. Aberfeldy took the lead 10-7 after 9 ends but Baillieston took a 3 at the next end. Baillieston took the mat up the green and played short ends which Aberfeldy struggled to catch. By the 13th end, Baillieston had stretched their lead to 17-11 and took a further shot at the 14th end. That left Aberfeldy requiring a seven at the last end - a mountain to climb indeed. However, the last end finished with Aberfeldy scoring3 shots and the final score was 18-14. Aberfeldy tried their very best but lost to very worthy opponents.
The ladies were all fantastic ambassadors for the club and received their Silver Bowls Scotland medals at the presentation afterwards. Congratulations to Baillieston and very well done to our ladies you made us proud!........ and many thanks to all the club members and supporters from Aberfeldy, Perthshire and beyond who cheered the girls on. They greatly appreciated your presence, applause and cheers!

LADIES FOURS MAKE SEMI~FINALS!
After a fantastic opening round at the National Championships in Ayr yesterday, our Ladies senior Fours won both their matches today to book their place in the semi~finals!
They were first up against Hillside BC from Leith and after 3 ends they were down 6~0. However, they fought back to level the match and there was not much in it with most of the game being nip and tuck as both sides battled it out. With only one end to go, Aberfeldy were down 12~13 but an exciting end of bowls was in store which ended in Aberfeldy lying 2 shots and only 2 bowls to come. Their skip missed the head and Christine wasn`t required to play her last bowl.
Their evening game was against Kirkhill BC and again the ladies got off to slow start going 4~0 down after the first 2 ends. A great fight back ensued with the match going level at 8~8 after 10 ends. By the 12th end, Aberfeldy were in the lead 11~8. After 14 ends, Aberfeldy had stretched their lead to 14~9 requiring Kirkhill to score a 5 to force an extra end. In a tends last end, Kirkhill had the upper hand until Christine drew perfectly to the jack and the Kirkhill skip generously conceded with her last bowl still to play.
The ladies are now in the semi~final which takes place at 9:30am tomorrow morning, with the final being played at 12:30pm tomorrow. Good luck from us all, girls!

NATIONAL BOWLS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2013
The Ladies Senior Fours team had a fantastic triumph in their first round at the National Bowls Championships in Ayr today when they beat Orbiston 23~2. The start was delayed by an hour due to a heavy thunderstorm but Aberfeldy gained a big lead in the first two ends when played restarted with a 7 at the first end and a 4 at the second. The rain eventually stopped but nothing could stop our ladies who played well and ran out victors by the 13th end! Well done and best wishes to Christine, Anne, Muriel and Meg who now play Hillside BC tomorrow (24th) at 12:30pm. Watch out for some photos in the National Championships 2013 folder within the Photographs Section.

Today saw a good day's competition in the Blackadder Pairs with the four rounds being played over 11 ends each game. The semi-finals were between Isla Duncan/Douglas Craik and Robbie Matthew/Diana Taylor and Ernie Swift/Ray Taylor and Anne Drummond/Mattie McDougall. The rain held off though the wind started to become a major factor, however, spectators were treated to a good final between Robbie Matthew/Diana Taylor and Ernie Swift/Ray Taylor. While the Swift/Taylor team got off to a good start, the Matthew/Taylor team pegged them back and at the last end there was only one shot separating the two with victory going to Ernie Swift and Ray Taylor. Congratulations to both teams. Pictures of the event can be found in the Photographs section.

It was a well fought match and Burrelton went into the final end with a one shot advantage. In an exciting finish, the Bankfoot skip tried to take the jack into the ditch where lay his two touchers. However, it was not to be and Burrelton were victorious! MONESS LANE WORKS
The Club has been informed that the planned works to Moness Lane have been slightly delayed but that work will now be completed by 22nd May. The Committee will continue to monitor progress with this matter in advance of the Scottish Ladies District 6 Final on Saturday 25th May. Members are asked to take care when using the lane during these works.
DISABLED ACCESS PATH COMPLETED
Work on the new path providing disabled access from the clubhouse to the adjacent raised viewing area has now been completed. The work was kindly funded by a grant from Perth & Kinross Council Social Enterprise Development Fund. Thanks also to Past President Tom MacDougall for overseeing completion of this project.
BOWLING GREEN TO BE DESIGNATED AS A "FIELD IN TRUST".
The Fields in Trust Challenge was set up in 2012 as part of HM The Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations, and local authorities were asked to nominate areas to be designated as Fields In Trust by public recognition of their importance for sport, play or recreation. Consequently, Perth & Kinross Council nominated Victoria Park, including the tennis court and bowling green areas, as a Field In Trust and will now enter into a legal agreement with the Fields In Trust organisation undertaking not to use the designated land for any purpose other than public recreation. This will ensure that the land, including our bowling green, is protected for community use and safeguard its future for the use and enjoyment of the residents of Aberfeldy. Further details of the council paper discussed at the Common Good Fund Committee meeting held yesterday can be accessed here.
The Committee believes that this is great news for the club, protecting use of the land for sport and recreation purposes in perpetuity.
1 May 2013

The rules and format for each competition are displayed on the noticeboard.

SURFACING OF MONESS LANE
Work commences this week on the surfacing of Moness Lane (the road that runs down the side of the clubhouse and green). This will require the installation of some drainage works prior to the tarmac surface being put down. It is anticipated that the work will take a couple of weeks altogether and will obviously involve some disruption and inconvenience to members. However, it will all be worth it in the end so please be patient while the works are ongoing.
